Bhante Kumaara,
Warm salutations from downunder.
Etienne Lamotte's "Histoire du Bouddhisme ancien" is an extraordinary
research tool. A sum of erudition. André Bareau's "Les sectes bouddhiques
du Petit Véhicule" is another book of typical French erudition which
addresses the early schisms period (I presume it has been translated).
Hazra's "The rise and decline of Buddhism in India" is most interesting in
its specific aspect - although I still do not really understand the decline
of Buddhism in its birthland.
For lighter, general reading, there is also Noble Ross Reat's "Buddhism - a
History", with specific chapters for the different countries where some
sort of Buddhism developed, and Edward Conze "A short history of Buddhism"
(really "short": I testify that the latter can be read within half a day).
