Hi, Derek,

>> sampassamaanena

DC> I just read that as a present participle, "completely seeing" ... no?

Take a look at how Thanissaro Bhikkhu translates following passage:

Pañcimaani, bhikkhave, anaagatabhayaani sampassamaanena alameva
aaraññikena bhikkhunaa appamattena aataapinaa pahitattena viharitu.m
appattassa pattiyaa anadhigatassa adhigamaaya asacchikatassa
sacchikiriyaaya.

Monks, these five future dangers are just enough, when considered, for
a monk living in the wilderness - heedful, ardent, and resolute - to
live for the attaining of the as-yet-unattained, the reaching of the
as-yet-unreached, the realization of the as-yet-unrealized.

Anguttara Nikaya V.77-80, Anagata-bhayani Suttas
The Discourses on Future Dangers

He translates:

sampassamaanena

as:

when considered

Since sampassamaanena can't be found in the PED, I think we can choose
such translation, especially since it suits the context very well.

So:

For thus, monks, should you train yourselves: 'Considering one's own
benefit, monks, it is proper to strive earnestly; considering the
benefit of others, monks, it is proper to strive earnestly;
considering the benefit of both, monks, it is proper to strive
earnestly.'
