Tarkhan
(29°30' N 31°13'E)
Tarkhan is with more than 2000 tombs one of the most important
cemeteries
at the time of state formation (about 3000 BC) in Egypt.
Petrie explains in his first publication (Petrie 1913: 1) of the site: 'a distinctive name is required for the early remains, which are the more important, this volume is named from the nearest village Tarkhan'. Petrie therefore used the name Kafr Ammar for burials of later date in the same series of cemeteries.
