Gerry,
I'd add that in the framework of the steppe hypothesis there is a variant of
placing the IE homeland at Middle Volga (where the Samara river joins it).
The Neolithic-Eneolithic cultures of this region (the Samara culture and
then the Khvalynsk culture) belong to the same type as the Sredny Stog
culture, but it has been demonstrated
(http://users.hartwick.edu/iaes/horseback/table2.html) that the Khvalynsk
culture is some older than the Sredny Stog one (which is usually dated
4400-3500 BC). Besides, the Pit Grave (= Yamnaya) culture - a classical
"Kurgan" culture - has been established in the Early Bronze Age on the
territory of the Khvalynsk culture and only later spread westward to the
Pontic steppes and ousted the Sredny Stog population.

If we accept this variant we should consider the Neolithic Samara culture as
PreIE, the Eneolithic Khvalynsk culture as Early IE and the Eneolithic
Sredny Stog culture as its earliest offspring (Anatolian ?). The Pit Grave
culture would represent in this case the main bulk of the IE family.

However it is too early to make final conclusions. Further investigations
are needed.

Alexander
