Eiður svarar: "Ekki er eg þess fús.
Eidr answers: "I am not willing (to do) this.

It seems to me you risk much how the journey is taken and to fight with such an accursed fellow as Grimr is. (Z. eiga 10 - e. við e-n, to have to do with, fight with)

Ef þú vilt fara þá far þú við marga menn svo að þú eigir allt undir þér.
If you want to go then, go with many men so that you would have (subjunctive) everything under you.

"Það þykir mér engi frami," segir Þorkell, "að draga fjölmenni að einum manni en það vildi eg að þú léðir mér sverðið Sköfnung og vænti eg þá að eg skuli bera af einhleypingi einum þótt hann sé vel að sér búinn.
"It seems to me no distinction," says Thorkell, "to drag many people to one man, but I wanted that, that you lend me the sword "Shin-bone" and I would expect then that I should surpass one single person without hearth or home although he be (subjunctive) himself well prepared.

"Þú munt þessu ráða," segir Eiður, "en ekki kemur mér það á óvart þótt þú iðrist eitthvert sinn þessa einræðis.
"You would advise this," says Eidr, "but that doesn't take me by surprise although you repented (subjunctive) sometime of this self-will. (Z. úvarr 1 - kom e-m á úvart, to come unawares upon one, take one by surprise

En með því að þú þykist þetta gera fyrir mínar sakir þá skal þér eigi þessa varna er þú beiðir því að eg ætla Sköfnung vel niður kominn þótt þú berir hann.
And because you think this judges my charges then you shall not deny this when you ask for that, that I foreordain Shin-bone come well down although you carry him (i.e., the sword).

And that is the sword's nature that a day shall not shine on the boss or knob at the end of the sword hilt and shall not carry him so that women be (subjunctive) beside.

Ef maður fær sár af sverðinu þá má það sár eigi græða nema lyfsteinn sá sé riðinn við er þar fylgir.
If a man gets wounded from the sword, then that wound is not able to heal except the healing stone be moved through the air with there where helps.

Þorkell kvaðst þessa ætla vandlega að gæta og tekur við sverðinu en bað Eið vísa sér leið þangað sem Grímur ætti bæli.
Thorkell said for himself (to) intend to watch this closely and receives the sword and asked Eidr (to) show him the way to the place where Grimr had his lair. (Z. vandliga 1 - gæta e-s vandliga, to watch closely)

Eiður kvaðst það helst ætla að Grímur ætti bæli norður á Tvídægru við Fiskivötn.
Eidr said for himself that, that Grimr most intended to have a lair north of Tfidaegru by Fish-water.

Then Thorkell rides north to the mountain road, the way that Eidr showed him and when he came to the very long mountain road, he sees water beside a large hut and comes to the place. (?)

Thorkell now comes to the hut and he then sees where a man sits beside the water by a waterfall and caught fish (i.e., he was fishing). (Z. draga 1 - draga fisk, to catch, pull up fish with a line)

Sá hafði feld á höfði.
He had a cloak on his head.

Thorekell dismounts and ties the horse under the hut's walls.

Síðan gengur hann fram að vatninu þar sem maðurinn sat.
Then he steps forward to the water where the man sat.

Grimr saw the man's shadow which carried to the water (i.e., which fell on the water) and he suddenly springs up. (Z. ganga - ganga fram, to step forward)

Thorkell had then so much come to him and stabs at him and hit the hand above the wrist and it was not wounded much. (Z koma 4 - koma á e-t, to come on, hit) (Z. úlfliðr - wolf's joint, the wrist)

Grímur rann þegar á Þorkel og takast þeir fangbrögðum.
Grimr ran at once to Thorkel and they began wrestling.

Kenndi þar brátt aflsmunar og féll Þorkell og Grímur á hann ofan.
Recognized there soon a difference in strength and Thorkell fell and Grimr down upon him. (Z. ofan 4 - o. á or o., down upon).

Þá spurði Grímur hver þessi maður væri.
Then Grimr asked who this man was.

Þorkell kvað hann engu skipta.
Thorkell told him it makes no difference.
