Var þar Kolfinnur fyrir og fjöldi manns því að forvitni mikil var mönnum að sjá atgang þessa ungu manna því að báðir voru þeir sterklegir.
Kofinnur was already there and a great number of men because people were very courious to see this these young men fighting because the both were strong.

Það var þá siður að kasta feldi undir fætur sér.
It was then (the) custom to throw cloaks under one's feet.

Það voru lög þeirra að sá þeirra er af feldi hopaði skyldi leysa sig þrem mörkum silfurs.

The one of them was was not able to fight who previously let his blood (fall) to the ground.


Eftir það voru sögð upp hólmgöngulög milli þeirra.
After that were proclaimed the rules of the combat between them.

Búi átti fyrr að höggva því að honum var á hólm skorað.
Bui struck a blow sooner because he was challenged to a duel.

Hvortveggi hafði góðan skjöld og öll önnur vopn.
Both had good shields and all other weapons.

Búi hjó þá til Kolfinns.
Bui struck then to Kolfinn.

Kolfinnur brá þá við skildinum og tók af öðrumegin mundriða.
Kolfinnur then warded off (the blow) with the shield and took off (the) other-side handle of the shield.

Eftir það hjó Kolfinnur þvílíkt högg til Búa.
After that Kolfinnur struck such a blow against Bua.

Búi hjá þá til Kolfinns og gerði ónýtan fyrir honum skjöldinn og særði hann miklu sári á höndina.
Bui then stuck at Kolfinn and the shield became useless for him and injured him (with) a great wound in the hands.

Var Kolfinnur þegar óvígur.
Kolfinnur was then unable to fight.

Menn hlupu þá í millum þeirra og voru þeir skildir.
Men sprang then between them and they were separated.

Eftir það fór hvor leið sína.
After that each went his own way.

Fór Kolfinnur á Korpúlfsstaði og batt Korpúlfur sár hans og kvað eigi minna að von um skipti þeirra Búa.
Kofinnur went to Korpulf's place and Korpulfur bound his wounds and said (he) didn't think to hope concerning their fights.

Dvaldist Kolfinnur nú þar um stund.
Kolfinnur stayed there now a while.


Búi sneri frá hólmstefnu heim til Kollafjarðar og var Ólöf við laug og heilsaði Búa.
Bui went from holmstefnu home to Kollafjardar and Olaf was at a hot spring (or taking a bath?) and greeted Bua.


Hann tók kveðju hennar og mælti: "Svo hefir nú borið til um fund okkarn Ólöf að eg mun eigi einn saman fara til hellis míns.

Þykir mér og leiðint að ganga hingað hvern dag til tals við þig.

Búi segir: "Hann mun nú ekki að spurður."
Bui says: "He will not now find out." [famous last words...]

Tók hann þá Ólöfu upp á handlegg sér og gekk leið sína.
He then took Olof up by her arm and (they) went on their way.

Fóru þau þar til er þau komu í helli Búa.
They went there until when they came to Bui's cave.

Var Esja þar fyrir og heilsaði þeim: "Þykir mér þú Búi nú haft hafa vel að máli, varið hana Ólöfu fyrir vanmennum enda flutt hana nú úr klandri þeirra.
Eska was already there and greeted them: "It seems to me you, Bui, now have well to speak of, Olof, she, been previously a worthless person if she were carried now from their molestation.

Skaltu Ólöf mín vera hér velkomin."
You will, my Olof, be welcome here."

Ólöf kvað nú Búa mundu ráða sínum vistum að sinni.
Olof now said to Bui (she) would plan staying at his (place).

Kolfinnur spurði brotttöku Ólafar.
Kolfinnur asked to take away Olof.
