Þá svarar Kjartan: "Það munuð þér ætla að sá muni eigi einurð til hafa við
að ganga er það hefir mælt. En hér máttu þann sjá."
Then Kjartan answers, “You will expect it that that one will not have chosen
to come near when (or since?) he said it. But here you are able to see that
one.”
"Sjá má eg þig," segir konungur, "og eigi smáráðan. En eigi mun þér þess
auðið verða að standa
“I am able to see you,” says (the) king, “and not aiming at things small
(Z). But this will not fall to your lot to have
yfir höfuðsvörðum mínum og ærna hefir þú sök til þess þótt þú heitaðist eigi
við fleiri konunga
my head in (your) power (Z) and you have matters enough? to this yet you

inni að brenna fyrir þá sök er þér væri hið betra kennt. En fyrir það er eg
vissi eigi hvort hugur

griðum hvert er þér viljið af
if you sail from Norway and then when you arrive hither. Now go in peace
and in truce where you wish
þessum fundi. Skal eigi pynda yður til kristni að sinni því að guð mælir svo
að hann vill að engi
komi nauðigur til hans."

because God says so that he does not wish anyone to come reluctantly to
Him.”
Var góður rómur ger að máli konungs og þó mest af kristnum mönnum. En
heiðnir menn mátu við Kjartan að hann skyldi svara sem hann vildi.
Good applause was made at (the) king’s speech and yet most from Christian
men. But the heathen men left it to Kjartan that he should answer as he
wished.
Þá mælti Kjartan: "Þakka viljum vér yður konungur er þér gefið oss góðan
frið og þannig máttu
Then Kjartan spoke, “We wish to thank you, King, when you give us good peace
and thus you are able
oss mest teygja að taka við trúnni að gefa oss upp stórsakir en mælir til
alls í blíðu þar sem þér
to best entice us to accept the faith to forgive us great offenses but speak
to all in kindness there where you
hafið þann dag allt ráð vort í hendi er þér viljið. Og það ætla eg mér að
taka því aðeins við trú í
have all that day our state of life in hand when you wished. And I expect
it for myself to accept it, only with (the) faith in

Þá segir konungur og brosti að: "Það sér á yfirbragði Kjartans að hann
þykist eiga meira traust
