I was just reading about medieval weaving and learned that scarlet was a
special term for fabric that had been handled by raising the nap with teasel
and then shearing it. The process was repeated four times to produce
scarlet fabric. The fabric could also have been dyed. So last month when
we had the instance of the red scarlet-kyrtle, it was likely a reference to
imported fabric.
