It drew near to the time of (the) Thing (framan Z). Hoskuld now readies
himself (to go) from home and many crowds of men (as well). Olaf, his son,
is on (the) journey with
honum. Þeir tjalda búð sína. Þar var fjölmennt. Egill Skalla-Grímsson var á
þingi. Allir menn höfðu á máli
him. They hang their booth (with cloth). (It) was well attended there.
Egill Skalla-Grim's son was at (the) Thing. All people spoke of (Z mál #4)
er Ólaf sáu hversu fríður maður hann var og fyrirmannlegur. Hann var vel
búinn að vopnum og klæðum.
when (they) saw Olaf, how handsome and distinguished-looking a man he was.
He was well equipped as to weapons and clothing.
Það er sagt einn dag er þeir feðgar Höskuldur og Ólafur gengu frá búð og til
fundar við Egil. Egill fagnar
It is said one day that they, father and son, Hoskuld and Olaf, went from
(their) booth and to a meeting with Egill. Egill receives
þeim vel því að þeir Höskuldur voru mjög málkunnir. Höskuldur vekur nú
bónorðið fyrir hönd Ólafs og
them well because they Hoskuld (and Egill) were very well acquainted.
Hoskuld broaches now the proposal for Olaf's hand and
biður Þorgerðar. Hún var og þar á þinginu.

Egill kvað svo vera skyldu.

Egill gekk nú til fundar við Þorgerði og tóku þau tal saman.
Egill went now to a meeting with Thorgerd and they began a discussion
together.
Þá mælti Egill: "Maður heitir Ólafur og er Höskuldsson og er hann nú
frægstur maður einnhver.
Then Egill spoke, "A man is called Olaf and is Hoskuld's son and he is now
one of the very most famous men (Z einnhver).
Höskuldur faðir hans hefir vakið bónorð fyrir hönd Ólafs og beðið þín. Hefi
eg því skotið mjög til þinna
Hoskuld, his father has brought up a proposal for Olaf's hand and asked for
you. I have turned it much to you
ráða. Vil eg nú vita svör þín. En svo líst oss sem slíkum málum sé vel fellt
að svara því að þetta gjaforð er göfugt."
to decide. I want now to know your answer. But so seems to us that such a
proposal be well brought to answer because this match is noble.
Þorgerður svarar: "Það hefi eg þig heyrt mæla að þú ynnir mér mest barna
þinna. En nú þykir mér þú það
Thorgerd anwers, "I have it heard said that you love me most of your
children. But now it seems to me you
ósanna ef þú vilt gifta mig ambáttarsyni þótt hann sé vænn og mikill
áburðarmaður."

Egill segir: "Eigi ertu um þetta jafnfréttin sem um annað. Hefir þú eigi það
