Hrútur bjó þrjá vetur á Kambsnesi og heimtir jafnan fé að Höskuldi á þingum
Hrútr lived three winters at Kambsnes and claims equal (an equal share of the) property against Höskuldr at (the) Things

eða öðrum lögfundum og var vel talaður. Kölluðu það flestir að Hrútur hefði
or other legal-meetings and was well spoken (ie he was a good speaker). Most (people) said that, that Hrútr had

rétt að mæla. En Höskuldur flutti
(flytja) það að Þorgerður var eigi að hans ráði
(the) right to speak (ie plead his case). But Höskuldr pleaded (see flytja, Z2) that, that Þorgerðr was not with his consent (see ráð, Z5)

gift Herjólfi (dative) en lést (látast) vera lögráðandi móður sinnar og skilja við það.
married to Herjólfr but (and) declares-of-himself (that he) is (the) legal-guardian of his mother and (they) part with that.

Það sama haust eftir (eptir) fór Höskuldur að heimboði til Þórðar godda. Þetta spyr Hrútur
That same autumn after, Höskuldr travelled to a feast to Þórðr goddi. Hrútr learns-of this

og reið hann á Höskuldsstaði við tólfta mann. Hann rak (reka) á brott naut tuttugu.
and he rode to Höskuldsstaðir with the twelth man (ie with eleven others). He drove away twenty cattle.

Jafnmörg lét hann eftir (eptir) . Síðan sendi hann mann til Höskulds og bað
Equally-many he left behind. After-that he sent a man (person) to Höskuldr and asked (him)

segja hvert eftir var að leita. Húskarlar Höskulds hlupu (hlaupa) þegar til vopna (vápna)
to say where (the) cattle were to-be-looked for (see vera + inf, see leita eptir, Z6). Höskuldrs house-carles (menservants) ran at-once to(their) weapons

og voru ger (göra) orð (nom. subject) þeim (dat. indirect object) er næstir voru og urðu þeir fimmtán saman. Reið hver þeirra
and words were made (a message was sent) to those who were nearest and they became fifteen together. Each of them rode

svo sem mátti hvatast. Þeir Hrútur sáu eigi fyrr eftirreiðina (eptirreið) en þeir
as vigourously as (he) could. They, Hrútr (and co) saw not the pursuit-on-horseback (lit: riding after) before (fyrr en) they

áttu skammt til garðs á Kambsnesi. Stíga þeir Hrútur þegar af baki og binda
had (but J) a-short-distance (see skammr, Z1) (to go) to (the) dwelling at Kambsnes. They, Hrútr (and co) at-once stepped off (horse-)back (ie dismounted) and tie-up (bind)

hesta sína og ganga fram á mel nokkurn og sagði Hrútur að þeir mundu þar við taka,
their horses and walk forward to a certain sand-bank and Hrútr said that they would there receive (them), (ie take them on)

kvaðst það hyggja þótt seint gengi fjárheimtan við Höskuld að eigi
declared-of-himself to think (that he thought that) even though the-claim-for-money-owing against Höskuldr (suit) went slowly, that

skyldi það spyrjast að hann rynni (renna, subjunctive form) fyrir þrælum hans. Förunautar Hrúts sögðu
that should not be made-widely-known that he would-run before (ie flee from) his (ie Höskuldr’s) slaves (thralls). Hrútr’s travelling-companions said

liðsmunur
mundi vera. Hrútur kvaðst það ekki hirða, kvað þá því verrum förum (far, neut noun) fara skyldu
that (there) would be a difference-of-force
(ie they were out-numbered = the odds were against them). Hrútr declared-of-himself (that he) cared not (gave not a tinker´s damn) about that, declared them (ie that they, ie Höskuldr’s men) in that (affair) should travel in a worse passage (ie end up worse off)

sem þeir væru fleiri. Þeir Laxdælir hljópu nú af hestum sínum
as they were more (ie to the extent that there were more of ‘em). They, (the) Laxdalers leapt now from their horses

og bjuggust (búast) nú við. Hrútur bað þá ekki meta muninn og hleypur í móti
and now made-preparations. Hrútr asked them not to measure the-difference (ie weigh up the odds = hesitate) and runs towards

þeim. Hann hafði hj álm á höfði en sverð brugðið (bregða) í hendi en skjöld í
them. He had a helmet on (his) head but (and) a sword drawn in (one) hand but (and) a shield in

annarri.
Hann var vígur allra manna best. Svo var Hrútur þá óður að fáir
(the) other. He was (the) best skilled-in-arms of all men (persons). Hrútr was then so mad (frenetic) that few

gátu fylgt honum. Börðust vel hvorirtveggju um hríð en brátt fundu þeir Laxdælir
could (geta + pp) follow (keep up with) him. Each-of-the-two (sides) fought well for a while but soon they, the Laxdalers, found

það að þeir áttu þar eigi við
sinn maka sem Hrútur var því að þá
that, that they
had not to do with (fought with see eiga við e-n, Z10) their match (ie they were not dealing with their equal) such as Hrútr was, because then

drap hann tvo menn í einu athlaupi. Síðan báðu Laxdælir sér griða. Hrútur
he killed two men in one battle-rush (onslaught). After-that (the) Laxdalers asked for themselves peace (begged for quarter). Hrútr

kvað þá víst hafa skyldu grið. Húskarlar Höskulds voru þá allir sárir, þeir
declared them (that they) should certainly have peace (be given quarter). Höskuldr’s house-carles (menservants) were then all wounded (sore), those

er upp stóðu, en fjórir voru drepnir. Hrútur fór heim og var nokkuð sár en
who stood up (were still standing), but four were killed. Hrútr went home and was somewhat wounded (sore) but

förunautar hans lítt eða ekki því að hann hafði sig mest frammi haft. Er það
his travelling-companions little or not (at all) because he had had (ie placed) himself most forward (way out in front). That is

kallaður Orustudalur síðan þeir börðust þar. Síðan lét
Hrútur af höggva féið.
called Orustudalr (Battle’s-Dale) after they fought there. After-that Hrútr caused
(láta, Z5) to slaughter (see höggva af, Z6) the-cattle )ie had the cattle killed).
