Útkoma Hrúts

Hrut's Arrival in Iceland

 

Nú er frá Höskuldi að segja að ráð hans er virðulegt.

 

Now (it) is of Hoskuld to say that his state-of-life is worthy.

 

 

Var hann höfðingi mikill.

He was a great leader.

 

 

Hann varðveitti mikið fé er átti Hrútur Herjólfsson bróðir hans.

 

He kept much wealth which his brother Hrut, Hejolf's son, had.

 

 

Margir menn mæltu það að nokkuð mundu ganga skorbíldar í fé Höskulds ef hann skyldi vandlega út gjalda móðurarf hans.

 

Many men said that to some would go scoring-axes in Hoskuld's wealth if he should carefully repay out his maternal inheritance.

 

Hrútur er hirðmaður Haralds konungs Gunnhildarsonar og hafði af honum mikla virðing.

 

Hrut is a king's-man of King Harold, Gunnihild's son, and had from him much esteem. 

 

 

Hélt það mest til þess að hann gafst best í öllum mannraunum.

 

There were many reasons for this that he was proven best in all trials.  (Z. halda III –  heldr þar margt til þess, there are many reasons for this)

 

 

En Gunnhildur drottning lagði svo miklar mætur á hann að hún hélt engin hans jafningja innan hirðar hvorki í orðum né öðrum hlutum.

 

But Queen Gunnhild took such a great fancy to him that she withheld nothing his equals within conceals neither in words nor other things.     (Z. mæti - leggja m. á e-n, to take a fancy for)

 

 

En þó að mannjafnaður væri hafður og til ágætis manna talað þá var það öllum mönnum auðsætt að Gunnhildi þótti hyggjuleysi til ganga eða öfund ef nokkurum manni var til Hrúts jafnað.

 

And/but although comparison-of-men were had and to an excellent man spoken that that to all men evident that Gunnhild was thought thoughtlessness to go or envy if some man was to Hrut's equal. (huh?)

 

Með því að Hrútur átti að vitja til Íslands fjárhlutar mikils og göfugra frænda þá fýsist hann að vitja þess, býr nú ferð sína til Íslands.

 

In case that Hrut had to go to Iceland much property and noble relatives then desired him to go thus, (he) prepares now his journey to Iceland.  (Z. með 9 – m. því at, in case that)

 

Konungur gaf honum skip að skilnaði og kallaðist hann reynt hafa að góðum dreng.

 

(The) king gave him a ship at (their) parting and said that he had found him a good and brave fellow.     (Z. kalla 6 - konungr kallaðist hann reynt hafa at góðum dreng, the king said that he had found him a good and brave fellow)

 

Gunnhildur leiddi Hrút til skips og mælti: "Ekki skal þetta lágt mæla að eg hefi þig reyndan að miklum ágætismanni því að þú hefir atgervi jafnfram hinum bestum mönnum hér í landi en þú hefir vitsmuni langt umfram."

 

Gunnhild led Hrut to (the) ship and spoke: "I shall not speak this low (i.e., softly) that I have experienced you to much excellent-man because you have abilities equal to the best men her in the land and you have sagacity long beyond (others).

 

Síðan gaf hún honum gullhring og bað hann vel fara, brá síðan skikkjunni að höfði sér og gekk snúðigt heim til bæjar.

 

Then she gave him a gold-ring and bade him farewell, drew her cloak over her head and went swiftly home to (her) town.    (Z. fara 8 – biðja e-n vel f., to bid one farewell)

 

 

En Hrútur stígur á skip og siglir í haf.

 

And Hrut goes on board and sails to sea.

 

 

Honum byrjaði vel og tók Breiðafjörð.

 

He got a fair wind and reached Breidafiord.

 

Hann siglir inn að eyjum.

 

He sails in to the islands.

 

 

Síðan siglir hann inn Breiðasund og lendir við Kambsnes og bar bryggjur á land.

 

Then he sails in Breidasund and lands at Kambsnes and conveys (the) gangway to shore.

 

 

Skipkoman spurðist og svo það að Hrútur Herjólfsson var stýrimaður.

The ship-arrival was-reported and also that, that Hrut Herjolf's son was captain.

 

Ekki fagnar Höskuldur þessum tíðindum og eigi fór hann á fund hans.

 

Hoskuld doesn't rejoice in this news (plural in ON) and doesn't go to meet him. 

 

 

Hrútur setur upp skip sitt og býr um.

 

Hrut draws his ship ashore and fences (it) around.  (similar to Z. búa 4 –Þórólfr lét setja upp skip sitt ok um b., he had his ship laid up and fenced round)

 

 

Þar gerði hann bæ er síðan heitir á Kambsnesi.

 

He build a farm there which later is called Kambsness.

 

 

Síðan reið Hrútur á fund Höskulds og heimtir móðurarf sinn.

 

Then Hrut rode to meet Hoskuld and claims his maternal inheritance. 

 

 

Höskuldur kvaðst ekki fé eiga að gjalda, kvað eigi móður sína hafa farið félausa af Íslandi þá er hún kom til móts við Herjólf.

 

Hoskuld stated for himself not to have money to give, said his mother didn't have gone penniless from Iceland then when she met Herjolf.   (Z. mót 4 – til móts við e-n, to meet one)

 

Hrúti líkar illa og reið í brott við svo búið.

 

(It) doesn't please Hrut and (he) rode away, efforts having been in vain.  (CV búa B8 -  þeir skildu við svá búit; þeir lögðu frá við svá búið, implying 'vain effort,')

 

 

Allir frændur Hrúts gera sæmilega til hans, aðrir en Höskuldur.

 

All Hrut's relatives do honorably to him, other than Hoskuld.
