My topic is Norse personal names here, so I do not want to go into the
topic of war any more than to say that I am fully aware the there were
wars between Danish lords, Norwegian lords, English lords, as well as
between Danes and Norwegians, English and Danes, English and Norwegians
and so forth, and so forth, and so forth. Eventually the commoners on
both sides sued for frith, forced their lords to make peace, or simply
removed them, and oaths were sworn, and weapons shelved, or turned on a
common fiend, some third party. My point here is that these typrs of
events do not seem to have had much influence on the naming tradition,
as witnessed by the ON practice of bearing all kinds of tribal names as
personal names, even of waring tribes. The general trend seems to have
been one where commoners tired of fighting, and forced frith. So much
for that, back to names.
