"Make a chest that fate befall each who wants to gather??

Hello Grace - may I offer - here
"things will go on - drag on - as fate/destiny will have it"
I do not see the "chest" here - not that  kind of thing "ark" here suggests
to me the sort of inexorable steps of destiny are what Njal is speaking of
I hope to have helped - I am missing these translations

Subject: [norse_course] Njall 12 end - - Grace's translation

I had major difficulties with two parts of this section.  Would appreciate
any help.
Grace

Skarphéðinn stóð með reidda öxina og glotti við og mælti: "Þessa öxi hafði
eg í hendi þá

Skarphedinn stood with the axe on his shoulder and grinned at (that) and
spoke, "I had this axe in hand then

er eg hljóp tólf álna yfir Markarfljót og vó eg Þráin Sigfússon og stóðu
þeir átta fyrir og

when I leaped twelve ells over Markar River and I slew Thrain Sigfuss' son
and they stood eight before (me)

fékk engi þeirra fang á mér. Hefi eg og aldrei svo reitt vopn að manni að
eigi hafi við komið."

and none of them got a hold of me.  I have also never so ? a weapon at a man
that  (I) have not struck."

Síðan hratt hann þeim frá bræðrum sínum og Kára mági sínum og óð fram að
Þorkatli.

After that he pushed them, his brothers and Kari, his inlaw, away and rushed
forward to Thorkell.

Skarphéðinn mælti þá: "Ger þú nú annaðhvort Þorkell hákur að þú slíðra saxið
og sest

Skarphedinn spoke then, "Now you do one or the other, Thorkell braggart,
that you sheathe the short sword and sit yourself

niður eða eg keyri öxina í höfuð þér og klýf þig í herðar niður."

down or I thrust the axe into your head and cleave you down to (your)
shoulders."

Þorkell slíðraði saxið og sest niður þegar og hafði hvorki orðið á fyrir
honum áður né

Thorkell sheathed the short sword and set himself down at once and (such)
had never happened to him before nor

síðan. Þeir Ásgrímur gengu þá út.

afterwards.  They, Asgrim (and company) went out then.

Skarphéðinn mælti: "Hvert skulum vér nú ganga?"

Skarphedinn spoke, "Where shall we go now?"

Ásgrímur svaraði: "Heim til búðar vorrar."

Asgrim answered, "Home to our booth."

"Þá förum vér bónleiðir til búðar," segir Skarphéðinn.

"Then we go a beggar's way to (the) booth," says Skarphedinn.

Ásgrímur snérist við honum og mælti: "Margstaðar hefir þú heldur verið
orðhvass en hér

Asgrim turned himself at that to him and spoke, "In every way you have
rather been (using) objectionable language, but here

er Þorkell átti í hlut að, þykir mér þú það eitt hafa á hann lagið er
maklegt er."

when Thorkell had a chance?, it seems to me you have it the right position
??on him who is powerful."

Gengu þeir þá heim til búðar sinnar og sögðu Njáli frá öllu sem gerst.

They went home then to their booth and told Njall of all that happened.

Hann mælti: "Búið arki að auðnu til hvers sem draga vill."

He spoke, "Make a chest that fate befall each who wants to gather???"

Guðmundur hinn ríki spurði nú hversu farið hafði með þeim Skarphéðni og
Þorkatli og

Gudmund the powerful asked now how (it) had gone with them, Skarphedinn and
Thorkell and

mælti svo: "Kunnigt mun yður vera hversu farið hefir með oss Ljósvetningum
og hefi eg

spoke thus, "(It) will be known to you how (it) has gone with us (and ) the
Ljos Water people and I have

aldrei farið jafnmikla skömm né sneypu fyrir þeim sem nú fór Þorkell fyrir
Skarphéðni og

never behaved with even so great shame nor dishonour before then as now
Thorkell behaved before Skarphedinn and

er þetta allvel orðið."

(it) is well done."

Síðan mælti Guðmundur til Einars Þveræings bróður síns: "Þú skalt fara með
öllu liði

Afer that Gudmund spoke to Einar Thveraeing, his brother, "You shall got
with all my company

mínu og veita Njálssonum þá er dómar fara út en ef þeir þurfa liðs annað
sumar þá skal eg sjálfur veita þeim lið."

and assist Njall's sons then when court goes out and if they need some more
help then I shall help them myself."

Einar játaði þessu og lét segja Ásgrími.

Einar agreed to this and had Asgrim told.

Ásgrímur mælti: "Ólíkur er Guðmundur flestum mönnum að höfðingsskap."

Asgrim spoke, "Gudmund is unlike most men as to chieftainship."

Ásgrímur sagði síðan Njáli.

Asgrim told Njall after that.
