Einu hverju sinni var það að Mörður kom til Bergþórshvols.
It was at one particular time that Morð came to Bergthor's Knoll.
Hann mælti til þeirra Njálssona: "Veislu hefi eg þar stofnaða og ætla eg að

Þeir hétu að fara. Fer Mörður nú heim og býr veisluna. Hann bauð þangað

They promised to go. Morð now goes home and prepares the feast. He invited thither
many farmers/yeomen and at the feast was a crowd of people.
The Njalssons came thither and (also) Kari
Mörður gaf Skarphéðni gullsylgju mikla en Kára silfurbelti en Grími og Helga
góðar gjafar. Þeir koma heim og hrósa gjöfum þessum og sýna Njáli.
Morð gave Skarpheðin a great gold buckle - Kari a silver belt and Grim and Heldi
(were given) good gifts. They come home and praise these gifts and show Njal.

Litlu síðar höfðu þeir heimboð með sér, Höskuldur og Njálssynir, og buðu
þeir fyrri Höskuldi.
A little later they had a home feast for themselves, Hoskuld and the Njalssons
and they prepared (a place) for Hoskuld
Skarphéðinn átti hest brúnan, fjögurra vetra gamlan,
bæði mikinn og sjálegan. Hann var graður og hafði ekki verið fram leiddur.
Skarpheðin had a black (Z) stallion, four years old both big and handsome
he had not been led forward (?not worn tack/harness)
Þann hest gaf Skarphéðinn Höskuldi og með hross tvö. Allir gáfu þeir
Höskuldi gjafar og mæltu til vináttu.
This stallion - Skarpheðin gave to Hoskuld and with (him) two mares.
All gave Hoskuld gifts and spoke of friendship
Síðan bauð Höskuldur þeim heim í Ossabæ. Hann hafði þar marga fyrirboðsmenn
og mikið fjölmenni.
Afterwards Hoskuld invited them home to Ossaby. He had there many important guests

fylgdu honum og fjölmennið allt. Mæltu hvorir að engir skyldu í millum
þeirra komast.
The Sigfussons followed/accompanied him and all the crowd. Everyone
said that nothing should come between them
Nokkuru síðar kom Mörður í Ossabæ og kallaði Höskuld til máls við sig. Þeir
gengu á tal.
Some time after (this) Morð came to Ossaby and called Hoskuld to talk with him.

Mörður mælti: "Mikill verður mannamunur með yður Njálssonum. Þú gafst þeim
góðar gjafar en þeir gáfu þér gjafar með miklu spotti."
Morð spoke "Great is the difference between you and the Njalssons. You gave
(sing- thou gavest) to them good gifts, and they gave you gifts of great mockery
