87. kafli

Kolbeinn hét maður og var kallaður Arnljótarson. Hann var þrænskur maður.
Hann sigldi

Kolbeinn was the name of a man and (he) was called Arnljot's son. He was a
man from Trondheim. He sailed

það sumar út til Íslands er Þráinn og Njálssynir fóru utan. Hann var þann
vetur í Breiðdal

that summer out to Iceland when Þráinn and Njall's sons sailed abroad. He
was that winter in Breiddale in (the) east.

"I am called Hrapp," says he.

"Hvers son ert þú?" segir Kolbeinn.

"Whose son are you?" says Kolbeinn.

Hrappur svarar: "Eg er son Örgumleiða Geirólfssonar gerpis."

Hrapp answers, "I am a son of Orgumleid, son of Geirolf the bold."

"Hvað vilt þú mér?" segir Kolbeinn.

"What do you want with me?" says Kolbeinn.

"Eg vil biðja þig," segir Hrappur, "að þú flytjir mig um haf."

"I want to ask you," says Hrapp, "that you convey me over the sea."

Kolbeinn spyr: "Hver nauðsyn er þér á?"

Kolbeinn asks, "What need is to you in (it)?"

"Eg hefi vegið víg eitt," segir Hrappur.

"I have slain one slaying, " says Hrapp.

"Hvert víg er það," segir Kolbeinn, "eða hverjir eru til eftirmáls?"

"Which slaying is that," says Kolbein, " or who are entitled to redress?"

Hrappur svarar: "Eg hefi vegið Örlyg Ölvisson Hróðgeirssonar hins hvíta en
til eftirmáls eru Vopnfirðingar."

Hrapp answers, "I have slain Orlyg Olvir's son, son of Hrothgeir the white,
but the Vopnfirth people are entitled to redress."

"Þess get eg að sá hafi verr er þig flytur," segir Kolbeinn.

"I think this that such (a one) has worse when they convey you," says
Kolbeinn.

Hrappur mælti: "Vinur er eg vinar míns en geld eg það er illa er til mín
gert enda skortir

Hrapp spoke, "I am a friend to my friends and I repay it when ill is done to
mine and money

mig eigi fé til að leggja fyrir farið."

Síðan tók Kolbeinn við Hrappi.

Afterwards Kolbeinn received Hrapp.

Litlu síðar gaf byr og sigla þeir í haf. Hrapp þraut vistir í hafi. Settist
