En er þeir komu að bænum vissu þeir eigi hvort Gunnar mundi heima vera.
And when they came to the Farmstead they did not know (knew not) whether Gunnar would be at home
 
Gissur mælti að nokkur skyldi fara heim á húsin og vita hvað af kannaði en
þeir settust niður á völlinn meðan.
Gizur said that someone should go back to the Farmstead buildings and see what he found, and they sat themselves down upon the ground meantime(to wait)
 
Þorgrímur austmaður gekk upp á skálann.
Gunnar sér að rauðan kyrtil ber við glugginum og leggur út með atgeirinum á
hann miðjan.
Thorgrim the Easterner (Norwegian) went up to the (sleeping) room Gunnar sees a red shirt by the window and thrusts the halberð into it's middle
 
Þorgrími skruppu fæturnir og varð laus skjöldurinn og hrataði
hann ofan af þekjunni.
The feet slipped from (under) Thorgrim and the Shield became loose and he staggered/fell down from  the thatch/roof (one supposes there was a ladder)
 
Gengur hann síðan að þeim Gissuri þar er þeir sátu á
vellinum.
He then goes to them - Gizur (and the rest) where they are sat upon the ground
 
Gissur leit við honum og mælti: "Hvort er Gunnar heima?"
Gizur looked at him and spoke "Is Gunnar at home"
 
"Vitið þér það en hitt vissi eg að atgeir hans var heima." segir
Austmaðurinn.
"You find out that (go figure) but I know this - His Halberð was at home"
 
Féll hann þá niður dauður.
Then he fell down Dead
 
Þeir sóttu þá heim að húsunum. Gunnar skaut út
örum að þeim og varðist vel
They attacked then at the Farm Buildings - Gunnar shot out arrows at them and defended himself well
 
og gátu þeir ekki að gert. Þá hljópu sumir á
húsin upp og ætluðu þaðan að að sækja.
but they were unable to do anything (make any headway). Then some leapt up onto the roofs of the  buildings to attack from there
 
Gunnar kom þangað að þeim örunum og
gátu þeir ekki að gert og fór svo fram um hríð.
Gunnar came upon them with (his) arrows and (again) they could not do anything (succeed) and so it went on for a while
 
Þeir tóku hvíld og sóttu að
í annað sinn. Gunnar skaut enn út örunum og gátu þeir enn ekki að gert og
hrukku frá í annað sinn.
They took a rest and attacked again (for a second try). Gunnar still shot arrows  and they were not able to do anything and fell back again (a second time)
 
Þá mælti Gissur hvíti: "Sækjum að betur, ekki verður af oss."
Then said Gizur "We must attack better or nothing happens for us"
 
Gerðu þeir þá hríð hina þriðju og voru við lengi. Eftir það hrukku þeir frá.
They made an attack (hrið -(  Z.2) the third time) and for a long time. After that they fell back
 
Gunnar mælti: "Ör liggur þar úti á þekjunni og er sú af þeirra örum og skal
eg þeirri skjóta til þeirra. Og er þeim það skömm ef þeir fá geig af vopnum
sínum."
Gunnar said "An arrow lies outside in the Thatch it is one of theirs. I shall shoot (it) at them. And shame them if they receive a wound from their own weapons"
 
Móðir hans mælti: "Ger þú eigi það son minn að þú vekir þá er þeir hafa áður
frá horfið."
His Mother spoke "do not do that my son - you would rouse/anger them when they have already turned away" (from attacking)
 
Gunnar þreif örina og skaut til þeirra og kom á Eilíf Önundarson og fékk
hann af sár mikið. Hann hafði staðið einn saman og vissu þeir eigi að hann
var særður.
Gunnar grasped the arrow and shot it at them and it hit Eilif Onundsson and he took a great wound from it.
He was stood alone and they did not know he was wounded
 
"Hönd kom þar út," segir Gissur, "og var á gullhringur og tók ör er lá á
þekjunni og mundi eigi út leitað viðfanga ef gnógt væri inni og skulum vér
nú sækja að."
"A hand came out" says Gizur "a gold arm-ring / band was on it and it took am arrow which was lying in the thatch, and (they) would not reach for/seek provision (?) if it were within and now we shall attack
 
THis seemed easier - and that made me suspicious so I re-checked
Still not happy - I would be grateful for any Critique/help
