This seemed quite straight forward at first but there a
couple of words I could not trace
63. kafli
Nú eggjar Starkaður sína menn. Snúa þeir þá fram í nesið
að þeim.
Now Starkað urges on his men. They turned off up the
headland toward them (Gunnar & Co)
hendi.
Sigurð Swinehead was first up (lead) and had a round
shield, in one hand and a cutlass/spear in the other (Weapon(Z) gives
spear/cutlass - meaning seems unclear)
Gunnar sees him and shoots at him with the bow (shoots
an Arrow)
He (Sigurð raises his shield when he saw the arrow fly,
but the arrow came through the shield and (into) his eye and came out at his
neck and that was the first kill.
Annarri ör skaut
Gunnar að Úlfhéðni ráðamanni Starkaðar og kom sú á
hann miðjan
Another arrow Gunnar shot at Ulfheðin (Wolfcoat) -
Starkað's Steward (or(Z) overseer) and came to him (hit him) in the middle (in
the waist)
og féll hann
fyrir fætur bónda einum en bóndinn féll um hann þveran.
Kolskeggur kastar
bani.
And he fell at the feet of a farmer (einum - one
of them) and he (the farmer) stumbled across him. Kolskegg cast a stone
that struck the head of the farmer and that was his bane (killed him - it was a
large stone)
Þá mælti Starkaður: "Ekki mun oss þetta duga að hann
komi boganum við og
göngum að fram vel og snarplega."
Then spoke Starkað "It is not helping
(duga) us that he can come at (the use of) his bow - now we go forward -
well and quickly (CV - with a dash)
Síðan eggjaði hver annan. Gunnar varði sig með boganum meðan hann mátti.
Then they urged one another on. Gunnar defended himself
with (his) bow as long as he was able
Síðan kastaði hann niður boganum. Tók hann þá atgeirinn og sverðið og
vegur
með báðum höndum. Er bardaginn þá hinn harðasti. Gunnar vegur þá
drjúgan
menn og svo Kolskeggur.
Afterwards he cast away his bow. He took then the
Halberð and the sword and fought/killed with both hands. It was a battle day
(bar + dag) that was most fierce Gunnar killed (many/several) men and the same
(did) Kolskegg
Þá mælti Þorgeir Starkaðarsonur: "Eg hét að færa
Hildigunni höfuð þitt
Gunnar."
Then said Thorgeir Starkað's Son "I vowed to obtain for
Hildegun - your head Gunnar"
"Ekki mun henni það þykja neinu varða
hvort þú efnir það eða eigi," segir
Gunnar, "en þó munt þú nær ganga hljóta
ef þú skalt það meðal handa hafa."
"Neither must she think any (G) worth (of it)" Says
Gunnar "and you must come near (closer) if you would (if you shall ?) have it in
your hands (actually = between your hands)
Þorgeir mælti þá við
bræður sína: "Hlaupum vér að honum fram allir senn.
Hann hefir engan skjöld
og munum vér hafa ráð hans í hendi."
Thorgeir spoke then to his brothers "We shall rush upon
him all (senn) at the same time/together. He has no sheild and we have his
fate in (our) hands
Þeir hljópu fram Börkur og Þorkell og
urðu skjótari en Þorgeir.
They ran/leaped forward, Bork and Thorkell and
they were quickly (Z) ahead of Thorgeir
Börkur
höggur til Gunnars. Gunnar laust við atgeirinum svo hart að
sverðið hraut úr
hendi Berki.
Bork slices.hews at Gunnar. Gunnar struck (MM&HP -
parried) with halberð so hard the sword flew (?) from Bork's hands (from
his grasp)
Sér hann þá til annarrar handar Þorkel standa í höggfæri við
sig.
He sees there on another side - Thorkell within
sword's reach (CV) of himself
Gunnar turned on his feet (MM&HP - pivoted)
He sliced at him with his sword and struck upon
Thorkell's neck and his head
flew off (MM&HP)
Fauk I could not find and since MM&HP say flew off
I tried looking at fljuga but the word fauk - specifically - was not
there
Any critique - corrections and stuff will be warmly
welcomed
Kveðja
