I can only help = Grace with what I saw - and I could so easily be wrong - I saw Giftist as reflexive in that she gave her self in marriage off her own bat - instead of getting someone to speak for her - like nice modest ladies were supposed (?)
With til handa I thought it referred to the Man's hand - into which the lady's hand would be placed in  marriage
Did he marry her or was it just betrothed personally I think it was marriage - but the reason it was related as - well - seeming unusual was the fact that - the man stayed with Daddy after his marriage

I have several questions. I couldn't figure out where giftist came from.
Then I wasn't sure if the usage of til handa was actually talking about the
person's hand in marriage and even then if it were, whose hand? It looked
like it was the man's. I decided perhaps wrongly that it meant "for." Then
also there was Grímur fékk
hennar. Did he actually marry her or was he just betrothed?
