Þeir Hrútur fóru austur til Konungahellu. En er þeir komu þar gengu í mót
þeim frændur og vinir og fögnuðu þeim vel. Þeir spurðu hvort konungur var í
bænum. Þeim var sagt að hann var þar. Síðan mættu þeir Ögmundi.

(they use Plural - but there is only one Hrut and no mention is made of his brother)

So:-  They (with) Hrut travelled East to RoyalStone when they came to go in with their friends and kin and entertained (Gordon) them well. They asked if the King was in town and were told that he was. After that they met Ogmund

Hann sagði þeim kveðju Gunnhildar og það með að hún mundi eigi bjóða þeim
fyrr en þeir hefðu fundið konung fyrir orðs sakir: "að svo þyki sem eg grípi
gulli á við þá. En eg mun þó til leggja slíkt er mér sýnist og veri Hrútur
djarfmæltur við konung og biðji hann hirðvistar. Eru hér og klæði er
drottningin sendir þér og skalt þú í þeim ganga fyrir konunginn."

He said to them Gunnhild's greetings that they must not take up her invitation until they had met the King first, for the reasons of rumour "that I shower gold on them (showing favour.)  But I will do as I please, and I want Hrut to speak boldly to the king  and ask to be one of his men.  Here is a robe the queen sends you - you shall wear it to go before the King.

Síðan fór Ögmundur aftur.

Then Ogmund returned

Annan dag eftir mælti Hrútur við Össur: "Göngum við nú fyrir konung"

"Það má vel," sagði Össur.

Another day after - (?two days later?) Hrut said to Ossur "Let's go see the King" "That would be well" said Ossur

Þeir gengu tólf saman og voru þeir allir frændur þeirra og vinir. Þeir komu
í höllina er konungur sat yfir drykkju. Gekk Hrútur fyrstur og kvaddi
konunginn.

They went twelve together - all their kin and friends. They came to the Hall where the King sat at drink. Hrut went in first and greeted the King. 

 Konungur hugði vandlega að manninum er vel var búinn og spurði
hann að nafni. Hann nefnir sig.

The King looked carefully at the man who wwas well dressed, and asked his name. He said his name

"Ert þú íslenskur maður?" sagði konungur.

"Are you an Icelander" said the King

Hann sagði að svo var.

he said it was so (true)

"Hvað hvatti þig hingað á vorn fund?"

What causes you to our meeting

"Að sjá tign yðra herra og það annað að eg á erfðamál mikið hér í landi og
mun eg yðvar verða við að njóta að eg fái rétt af."

To see your Highness (or magnificence - a choice) and I have a large inheritance here in (this) country and  I have need of you if I am to have what is due to me (I got lost there )

Konungur mælti: "Hverjum manni hefi eg heitið lögum hér í landi eða hver eru
fleiri erindi þín á vorn fund?"

To every man ihave I promised the law (justice) in this country do you have another mission with us ?

"Herra," sagði Hrútur, "eg vil biðja yður hirðvistar og gerast yðvar maður."

Lord said Hrut I want to ask you for the place of Kings man (?? special guard) and to be your man

Konungur þagnar við.

King was silent with (this)

Gunnhildur mælti: "Svo líst mér sem sjá maður bjóði yður hina mestu sæmd því
að mér líst svo ef slíkir væru margir innan hirðar sem þá væri vel skipað."

Gunnhild spoke "So seems (it) to me that this man is offering to you the greatest honour/respect, (in addition) it seems to me  if many were like him in the Kings Guards then it would be well

"Er hann vitur maður?" sagði konungur.

Is he a wise man said the King

"Bæði er hann vitur og framgjarn," segir hún.

He is both wise and eager / keen said she

Zoega reckoned eager - I could have preferred enthusiastic
