Very many thanks Alan, I appreciated your comment

More civilised are we? A peek at Iraq would soon convince you otherwise!

Just so Alan hence the row of ????? after my comment, I can see where I went wrong

but I am also not dissatisfied with my effort, Hrafnkell wont be permanently out of the Game

Hey regarding Iraq - there were an atrocious number of Humiliating Mind Games played - but the

characters in the Hrafmkell story were just plain brutal, plus ça change plus ç'est la meme chose

Saell Allir

Let this second copy please be used, for the other was full of typos, that is a lesson to me not to sit with the sun Due South, and an Arrow's Shot from a migraine (do any of you guys get these things)

Subject: [norse_course] Hrafnkell 571-591

Þá taka þeir Hrafnkel ok hans menn ok bundu (past) hendr þeira
á bak aptr.

Then they take Hrafnkell and his men and bind their hands behind their backs

Eptir þat brutu þeir upp útibúrit ok tóku reip ofan
ór krókum, taka (pres) síðan knífa sína ok stinga raufar á hásinum
þeira (their) ok draga þar í reipin ok kasta þeim (plural, probably referring to ropes, I think, but could refer to the men) svá upp yfir ásinn ok
575 binda þá svá átta saman.

After that they broke open the store and took down some ropes from the hooks.they then took their knives and thrust into the tendons amd dragged the rope through (?the slits they made?) amd they throw the rope up over the beam and strung them up eight together

Þá mælti Þorgeirr: 'Svá er komit nú kosti yðrum, (see my translation) Hrafnkell,
sem makligt er, ok mundi þér þykkja þetta ólíkligt, at þú
mundir slíka skömm fá af nökkurum manni, sem nú er orðit. (is happening, continuous present)

Then said Thorgeirr "so this is (to) your cost/charge Hrafnkell and it seems to be fair, you might have thought it unlikely, that you could get so much  (or such) shame from any man as now it has become

(In the next peice I saw the two eða's and an either/or - a choice)

Eða hvárt (Gordon says, introducing direct question: ’can it be...’ ) viltu, Þorkell, gera (now to do) : at sitja hér hjá Hrafnkeli ok
580 gæta þeira, eða viltu fara með Sámi ór garði á brott í örskotshelgi
við bœinn ok heyja féránsdóm á grjóthól nökkurum, þar sem
hvárki er akr né eng?'

What do you want Thorkell (want to do) sit here with Hrafnkell and watch over them or will you go with Sam away from the Farmstead, to a safe place, a (full) arrowshot from the farm and hold the confiscation court as some rocky mound (or place) where there is neither field (arable land) nor a meadow (pasture)  (a local custom perhaps or spiritual rule)

Þetta skyldi í þann tíma (at that time) gera (happen) , er sól væri í fullu suðri.

This should be done when the Sun is full due South

Þorkell sagði: (past) 'Ek vil hér sitja hjá Hrafnkeli. Sýnisk mér
585 þetta starfaminna.' (adjective)

Thorkell says "I will sit here with Hrafmkell is seems to be the lesser task

Þeir (they) Þorgeirr ok Sámr fóru þá ok háðu féránsdóm, ganga (singular)
heim (back, is best here, I think) eptir þat ok tóku Hrafnkel ofan ok hans menn ok settu
þá niðr í túninu, ok var sigit blóð fyrir augu þeim.

Then Thorgeirr and Sam went and held the confiscation court they walked home (?) after that and took Hrafnkell down and his men and set them (lying) down on the Meadow, and it had run - the blood - down into their eyes (force of gravity no doubt - they were upside-down)

Þá mælti Þorgeirr til Sáms, at hann skyldi gera (should do, deal) við Hrafnkel
590 slíkt, sem hann vildi, -- 'því at mér sýnisk nú óvandleikit við
hann.'

Then said Thorgeirr to Sam (that) he could with Hrankell as he would wish - for it seems to me you will have no trouble with him

Anyone who views this with horror, (as indeed did I) could remember the people of the Sagas were aless civilised race than are we (???????) never the less the shock soon wore off and it all seems so logical, but you cannot keep a good guy down and even less - A Bad One.

More civilised are we? A peek at Iraq would soon convince you otherwise!
