Í þenna tíma bjó Hólmgöngu-Bersi í Saurbœ á þeim bœ er í Tungu heitir.

At this time, dwelt Bersi (the) Island-warrior at Saurbæ (Muddy Farm) on that farm which is called Tunga (Tongue)

Hann ferr á fund Óláfs ok bauð Halldóri syni hans til fóstrs.

He travels to a meeting with Óláf and offered to (undertake the) fostering of Halldór his (Óláf’s) son.

Þat þiggr Óláfr, ok ferr Halldórr heim með honum.

That accepts Óláf, and Halldór travels (back) home with him (Bersi)

Hann var þá vetrgamall. Þat sumar tekr Bersi sótt ok liggr lengi sumars.

He was then one-winter old. That summer, Bersi takes ill (falls sick) and lies (ill) for a large part of (the) summer.

Þat er sagt einn dag, er menn váru at heyvirki í Tungu,

It is said one day, when men were at hay-making at Tunga,

en þeir tveir inni, Halldórr ok Bersi, lá Halldórr í vöggu.

but those two (were) inside Halldór and Bersi, Halldór lay in a cradle.

þá fellr vaggan undir sveininum ok hann ór vöggunni á gólfit.

Then the cradle falls (collapses?) under the boy and he (falls) out of the cradle onto the floor.

Þá mátti Bersi eigi til fara. Þá kvað Bersi þetta:

Then might Bersi not go to (him). Then Bersi recited this:

'Liggjum báðir í lamasessi

‘(We) both lie in a helpless state

Halldórr ok ek, höfum engi þrek;

Halldór and I, (we) have no strength;

veldr elli mér en œska þér,

old age causes (it) in me but youth in you,

þess batnar þér, en þeygi mér.'

From that (it will) get better for you, but yet not for me.’

Síðan koma menn ok taka Halldór upp af gólfinu; en Bersa batnar.

Later men come and take Halldór up off the floor; but (things) get better for Bersi (ie he recovers).

I’ve chosen Section G from Gordon´s Miscellanea for this week’s text. The text is from Laxdæla saga, chapter 28; the verse is found with some differences in Kormáks saga, chapter 16.
