En við þann átrúnað, at ekki verði at þeim mõnnum,
but - with regard to - that - belief - that - no - would happen - to - those - men
but (there is) a belief about that, that nothing [good] will come to those men,

er heitstrengingar fella á sik,
when - solemn vow - comes down (to fell, slay) - upon - themselves
when a solemn oath comes down on them.

þá hljóp hann af baki til hans ok hjó hann banahõgg.
then - leaped - he - off - (horse)back - towards/against - him - and - struck - him - deathblow
Then he leaped off his horse and struck him (Einar) a deathblow.

Eptir þat ríðr hann heim við svá búit á Aðalból ok segir þessi tíðendi.
after - that - rides - he - home - with - thus - settled - to - Aðalból - and - tells - this - news
After he had accomplished that, he rode home to Athalbol and related the news.

Síðan lét hann fara annan mann til smala í selit.
then - caused to be done - he - to go - another - man - to - sheep - in/at - the shieling
Then he sent another man to herd the sheep at the shieling.

En hann lét fœra Einar vestr á hallinn frá selinu
but - he - caused to be done - to bring - Einarr - west - to - the hillside - from - the shieling
And he had Einar brought to the hillside west of the shieling

ok reisti võrðu hjá dysinni.  Þetta er kõlluð Einarsvarða,
and - raises - a cairn - beside - the grave. this - is - called - Einarsvarði
and raised a cairn beside the grave.  This is called Einar's Cairn,

ok er þaðan haldinn miðr aptann frá selinu.
and - is - thereafter - the hillside - middle - evening - from - the shieling
and thereafter the hillside is (determines) mid evening (six o'clock) from the shieling
[i.e. when the sun is over the cairn (looking from the shieling) it is six o'clock in the evening]

Þorbjõrn spyrr yfir á Hól víg Einars, sonar síns.
Þorbjõrn  - heard out - over - at - Hóll - killing - of Einarr - son - his
Over at Hol, Thorbjorn heard about the slaying of his son Einar.

Hann kunni illa tíðendum þessum.
he - knows - badly - news - this
He took this news badly.

Nú tekr hann hest sinn ok ríðr yfir á Aðalból
now - takes - he - horse - his - and - rides - over - to - Aðalból
Then he fetched his horse and rode over to Athalbol

ok beiðir Hrafnkel bóta fyrir víg sonar síns.
and - requests - of Hrafnkell - compensation - for - slaying - son - his
and demanded compensation from Hrafnkel for the slaying of his son.

Hann kvazk fleiri menn hafa drepit en þenna einn.
he - declares - more - men - have - been killed - than - this one
He (Hrafnkel) said he had killed more men than (just) this one.

'Er þér þat eigi ókunnigt, at ek vil engan mann fé bœta,
is - to you - it/that - not - unknown - that - I - will - no - person - property - to compensate
"It is not unknown to you, that I pay no one any recompense,

ok verða menn þat þó svá gõrt at hafa.
and - will become - people - it - nevertheless - such - doing - to take
and people will just have to put up with that.

En þó læt ek svá sem mér þykki
but - nevertheless - confess - I - such - that - to me - seems
but even so, I confess that I regard

þetta verk mitt í verra lagi víga þeira, er ek hefi unnit.
this - deed - mine - among - the worst - slayings - those - which - I - have - done
this deed of mine among the worst of those slayings, which I have done.

Hefir þú verit nábúi minn langa stund,
have - you - been - neighbor - my - long - length of time
You have been my neighbor for a long time,

ok hefir mér líkat vel til þín ok hvárum okkar til annars.
and - have - to me - pleased - well - concerning - you - and - each - of us - to - other
and I have liked you, and the feeling has been mutual.

Mundi okkr Einari ekki hafa annat smátt til orðit,
would - of us - Einarr - nothing - have - other - small - concerning - come to pass
Nothing would have come up between Einar and myself other (than) small (things),

ef hann hefði eigi riðit hestinum.
if - he - had - not - ridden - the horse
if he had not ridden the horse.

En vit munum opt þess iðrask, er vit erum of málgir,
but - we (dual) - will - often - of it - repent - when - we - are - too - talkative
But we will often regret it, when we have said too much,

ok sjaldnar mundum vit þessa iðrask,
and - more seldom - will - we - of it - repent,
and we would more rarely regret it,

þó at vit mæltim færa en fleira.
than - if - we - spoke - a little - than - more
if we spoke less rather than more.

Mun ek þat nú sýna, at mér þykkir
will - I - it - now - show - that - to me - seems
I will now show you, that I regard

þetta verk mitt verra en õnnur þau, er ek hefi unnit.
this - deed - my - worse - than - others - nevertheless - which - I - have - done
this deed of mine as worse than any other which I have (ever) done.

Ek vil birgja bú þitt með málnytu í sumar, en slátrum í haust.
I - will - provide - farm - your - with - milch cows - in - summer - and - slaughtered meat - in - autumn
I will provide your farm with dairy cows in the summer, and slaughtered meat in the autumn.

Svá  vil ek gera við þik hvert misseri, meðan þú vilt búa.
such - will - I - make - with - you - every - six months - while - you - wish - dwell
I will do this for you twice a year, for as long as you wish to live here.
