Rather than being silent, it is a soft trill that most English-speakers
miss because we're not taught to hear it. The concept that "most names"
end in R is also erroneous... Harald Halfdan is not actually Haraldr
Halfdanr... This is just some silly idea that some English-speaker came
up with to justify putting an 'R' on the end of his or her name, and it
stuck.
I've run into this typically in the SCA, but also among a LOT of
American-born students.
The R on the end is a case declension and has nothing to do with naming.
