I'm researching the backgrounds, translations and definitions of Norse god
names.

One that has eluded me is "Mardoll".

Several english sources translate it to mean some sort of 'Light reflecting
off the Sea', but I can't seem to verify this.

"Mar-" seems to have been used for 'Sea' poetically. The word appears to
literally mean "deep blue". because the word is also used for 'bruises' and
some other injuries. Also, in Latin, the word "Mar" means 'Sea' or 'Ocean'
and that may have affected the Old Norse language.... or maybe not. I'm not
sure.

"-doll" on the other hand doesn't seem to have any connection with 'light'
in any form that I can find. It's possible that it's a noun-form with some
sort of vowel mutation - but I can't find anything that it might come from.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks.
