Einu sinni deildu norðanvindurinn og sólin um, hvort þeirra
væri sterkara. Þau sáu þá mann í hlýrri kápu á ferð á veginum.
Þeim kom þá saman um, að það þeirra skyldi teljast sterkara,
sem gæti neytt ferðamanninn til þess að fara úr kápunni.
Norðanvindurinn tók þá til að blása af öllum mætti, en því
meira sem hann blés, því þéttara vafði ferðamaðurinn kápunni
að sér; og að lokum gafst norðanvindurinn upp. Svó fór
sólin að skína og það varð hlýtt. Þá fór ferðamaðurinn undir
eins úr kápunni. Norðanvindurinn varð þá að kannast við,
að sólin væri sterkari en hann.
The North Wind and the Sun.
Once the North Wind and the Sun wagered who of them was stronger,
when a wanderer who had wrapped himself in a warm mantle,
came walking along the road. They agreed that he would count
as stronger, who could force the wanderer to take his mantle off.
The North Wind blew with all his might, but the more he blew,
the more tightly the wanderer wrapped himself into his mantle.
Finally the North Wind gave up. Now the Sun warmed the air and
it became warm, so that the wanderer took off his mantle after
only a short while. Then the North Wind had to admit that the
Sun was the stronger of the two.
