Just for fun, I'll mention the bogus etymology of the name given by a native analyzing it in Catalan:
"bar" - because there are many excellent pubs in the city
"cel" - because the city mild clima makes the sky blue most of the time
"ona" - because there are the waves of the sea on city beaches
