If we have no Hellenic etymology for thalassa/thalatta, then what? A few oddball ideas
 
1. A whacko idea would be Berber th-ala-th --if such a word existed and had the requisite meaning. Whacko, yes, but the Berbers may have preceded the Egyptians in northern Egypt and there may have been some ties.
 
2. Anything similar in Anatolian?
 
3. Aegean --could be anything

    Which one? ánthro:pos can't because of /th/, dró:ps can't because
of absence of an-
