Since there is similar optionality for kt and tk, etc., as in:

cortex > *cortice > corche\corcha\corcha 'cork'

pantex > *pantice > *pance > panza ; pancia It; pance \ panche OFr; pîntece = belly Ru;

porticus > porche OFr;

ma:sculus L; macho Sp;

*miscula:re VL; mesclar OSp; mischiare It; mexer Pu;

the opt. should first be due to tY vs kY, second to whether CCY > CYCY or CC, etc. That is, the clusters w CY can undergo as many opt. assim. in both dir. as possible.

That tY vs kY both existed at one time can be seen by dis. such as:

*ciccu > chico

cicer = chick-pea L; chícharo = pea Sp;

in which kY-k > tY-k seems a reasonable first step.

Also, in changes such as:

vere:cundia L; > vergüença \ vergüeña = shame OSp;

the opt. seen, equivalent to the opt. of ngV, makes alt. nYdY / NYgY likely.
