the opt. should first be due to tY vs kY, second to whether CCY > CYCY or CC, etc. That is, the clusters w CY can undergo as many opt. assim. in both dir. as possible.
That tY vs kY both existed at one time can be seen by dis. such as:
*ciccu > chico
cicer = chick-pea L; chícharo = pea Sp;
in which kY-k > tY-k seems a reasonable first step.
Also, in changes such as:
vere:cundia L; > vergüença \ vergüeña = shame OSp;
the opt. seen, equivalent to the opt. of ngV, makes alt. nYdY / NYgY likely.
