sik' actually means "to suck" in Yucateko, according to my Mayanist friends and smoking truly does suck. sik'ar is a "suck thing" as it were. There are related forms such as tz'ik- etc. in other Mayan languages.

The American Heritage Dictionary suggests Maya <sik'ar>,
from <sik> 'tobacco'.
