This IE * wer.-x-n.-kó+ is a dim. of * wer.-x-n.ó+ = swollen / grown / plant / tree, seen in:

geran = timber/beam/log Arm; * werno- > gwern W; verr = alder Alb;
etc.


It is two dim. of * wer.-x-n.-kó+ that, using metathesis and opt. changes, create the many words for 'branch / shoot / root'; from the same root but not always the same stem in all branches of IE.
