On the one hand, we've got:
Germanic *krabb- 'crab'
Semitic *?\a-k'rab- 'scorpion'
Greek kárabos 'a k. of bettle; crayfish, lobster; small boat'
Latin ca:rabus 'lobster; small small wicker boat decked with hide'
Latin scarabeus 'bettle'

Which in my own model would be related to Greek skorpí-os, Latin scorpi-o: 'scorpion', both coming from different Neolithic IE paleo-varieties. IMHO this etymology would be related to the exoskeleton of the these animals.
