The attested Hittite spellings are <har-tag-ga-as> (nom.sg.),
<har-tak-kan, har-tag-ga-an> (acc.sg.), <har-tag-ga-as> (gen.sg.). There
are no plene spellings, so the CVC sign <tag> can hardly represent a
stressed syllable with a full vowel. After an unstressed vowel, the
fortis velar stop (indicated by the "geminate" spelling) would have
undergone lenition (and would have been spelt single). To conclude, here
(as in many other cases) the CVC sign stands for /CC/. The first
syllable does not represent a full vowel either (no plene again), but
the vocalisation of an inherited syllabic rhotic, probably with an
anaptyctic vowel. From these spellings, we may infer that the Hittite
pronunciation was /h&rtka-/, in perfect agreement with the
reconstruction *h2r.tk^o-.
