In this kind of rough ISO-8859-1-friendly transcription, <H> stands for
aspiration (= IPA raised [h]). The caret (<^>) over a <k> or <g> marks
the PIE dorsal stops which underwent the "satem" development in some
branches, developing unconditionally into central/coronal
affricates/fricatives. They are usually believed to have been pre-velars
(IPA [c, J]), but there is also an alternative interpretation, according
to which PIE *k^ = IPA [k] (plain velar) and PIE *k = IPA [q]
(post-velar, uvular).
