This word should be in the archives for the Nostratic list, if not the early CybaList. I remember Carrasquer Vidal and Trask, inter alii, discussing it, c. 1998 or so, along with other aci- words in Latin.

It's probably a compound w * oxW-kYú+ \ xW-kYú+ like:

* oxWkYúpet!er.; accipiter = hawk L; o:kupterós H \ oxú- G;

* oxWkYúpYed*+; acupedius = swift-footed L; oxúpous G;

so approx. :

* oxWkYúpen.d.yó+s = quickly sinking/diving down (into the water) > * acupensios -i- > * aquepensis. > * aquipensir. \ etc.

aquipenser (m) -eris (g) \ acipenser (m) -eris (g) \ acipensis (m) -is (g) \ * accipensius = sturgeon? L; >> akkipe:síos G

and so would be one of the few L words w ev. for -us./is. > -ur./ir. (like satur) .
