I'm currently reading a paper by Françoise Bader with the title 'De mycénien matoropuro, azopozoo à grec matropolis, aleifobios: le traitement des sonantes-voyelles au premier millenaire'.

It's just an eye-catching title - she doesn't propose that <matoropuro> means 'metropolis', rather that it means the core part of Pylos. The related part of the thesis is that the alternation of <matoropuro> and <matopuro> represents an alternation of /ma:tropulo-/ and /ma:torpolo-/.
