This formation is quite common with root nouns. Thus from
*g^Hjem-/*g^Him- 'winter' we have *g^Heim-o- (the feminine variant in
Slavic *zima); note again the characteristically "misplaced" full grade.
Also when a root noun is not attested, we may nevertheless have a
*R(e)-o- derivative directly from the verb root, as in *bHerh1g^o-
'birch' <-- *bHreh1g^- (again with new *e in the wrong place). It's also
likely that *new-o- derives from *nu 'now'. The same pattern can be seen
in *h1dent-o- (Gmc. *tinda- 'spike, prong') from *h1dont-/*h1dn.t-
'tooth', though the latter is not a root noun sensu stricto; similarly
in Slavic *ve^dro- 'pail, bucket' < *wedr-o-.
