Sloppy thinking on my part; indeed it is ludicrous to infer anything about economic systems on the basis of a single word. Sometimes I get carried away with this stuff.

Yes, that seems to be Jaekel's implicit argument. I suppose the only way to see the manuscript is by going to the monastery, which might be practical for Torsten, but not for me.
