The story of Crassus' death was doubtless well-known to educated people
in Kadlubek's time. Master Vincent's unique contribution was not the
gold-pouring episode itself but the skilful way he intertwined it with
the history of Poland, thus making his patrons' legendary ancestors big
players on the political scene of Europe as far back as the Roman period
(not to mention Alexander the Great). He certainly understood which
side his bread was buttered.
