Checking Sihler, there seems to be some evidence that sonorant /r=/ before a vowel could give /ar/ in Latin (though the situation is not clear, at least to me, and it seems like /or/ could be another possible output from /r=V/). Still, at the moment, it does seem a zero-grade of *mori, *mr=i, could possibly theoretically produce Italic *mari. So maybe that's a strong contender?
