Franco-Provençal, according to what I've read, is a mis-nomer. The term came because the FP group of dialects had some of the innovations that French had vis-a-vis Provençal, but not all.
It was once spoken in Lyons, Franche-Comté and surrounding areas of France, all of French Switzerland and Savoy. Its remaining stronghold is Val d-Aosta, where Valdoten remains the everyday language for the locals. Everywhere else, it is regarded as a patois spoken only by the most ignorant.
