I'm jumping in without a context, sorry.,
My dictionary says pulsare changed (in French) to 'poulser, pousser' , then in Middle English, to possen and pushen.
.
Except that the Spanish cognate, pujar, has taken on the additional meaning 'to strain at stool'.

Skeat derives 'push' from Latin pulsa:re.
Why the -sh then?
