Oops, you got me there. Anyway, one of them is that if you can't
reconstruct the common ancestor form for a set of words which are
sufficiently close phonetically and semantically that you feel they
should have one, using the set of rules you know apply to other words
of that language, you might begin to suspect that the ancestor form
should be sought somewhere else.
