*-h1(e)m- could be a root noun of the kind that occurs in composition
rather than in isolation. There are may examples of such in various IE
groups. As for the glosses, *-ImoN/*-imamI is _very_ widespread with the
meaning 'understand'; cf. also Russ. pon'atnyj, Pol. poje,tny
'intelligent, capable of learning/understanding'.
