What Rosetti didn't mention and you ought to realize because you live
in Ardeal: the pronunciation in Hungarian is /'maeS-taer/, and that in
Transylvanian Romanian /'maeS-ter/, whereas /'me$-ter/ (i.e. fitting 100%
the writing me$ter) only in outside Romanian subdialects.
Because the standard Romanian language is influenced by Muntenia
Romanian subdialects, for some phonetic occurrences in the modern
Romanian writing system there are no specific fonts and/or diacriticals.
If you are no native-speaker of those subdialects that have the additional
sounds, you'll never know when the usual writing in Rosetti's et al.'s
books reflect the utterances exhaustively or only some of them.
However, it is not difficult: any native-speaker can learn them, provided
s/he has really good ears. Without this prerequisite an outsider would
never be able to imitate.

By the way: do you see here too Hungarian /'--/ > Romanian /-'-/?
(With the difference that in this Hungarian example /ü/ and /l/ have
to be taken together, forming the root, since it is the verb "to sit".
(Also note that in Romanian, iläu, plural ilaie /i-'la-ye/, has a variant,
ileu, plural ileie /i-'leu, i-'le-ye/.)
