From what I understand, -ly is related to like, German
Leiche originally "body". I've read this but don't
know how accurate it is.
Pretty evidently meant "cunning, deceitful, tricky"
sort of like Hiberno-English "cute hoor", then
"clever" then "good looking" --I suppose via "well
made up, adorned, prepared, etc."
