For one thing, they spoke a Germanic language. Second, according to
their own legends they came from Scandinavia. Third, that's what
archaeology says.

I've been discussing something similar with George for years, since I
think there must be some sort of actual story behind the account of
Odin's journey. The Gothic culture north of the Black Sea is too young
though for it to match such a story.
