The vowel harmony rule would then require that /a/ be a front vowel.
The system /i u o e/ is more typologically natural than /a i u o/ and
has the requisite rounding and frontness distinctions built in. The
goal was simply to come up with a simpler scheme than Sammallahti's
reconstruction, without making any major change. My system is in
one-to-one correspondence with his so the change is really cosmetic.
