but I've come to think not all names
for the hoopoe are onomatopea
In the first place
Kabyle has itchibib which is not
The bird does "hoopoo" not itchibib
so this word must have
a standard explanation.
I come to believe the crest is
the reason for the name
Out of *dza?p- "crest, mane, tuf of hair"
you can derive PIE *H2eH2p
Latin form HoHp > u:pupa.
I think Spanish looks better
if we start with *H2aHp- ?
Hesychius ap- < H2 is regular
Greek epo:ps is more tricky
z and dz sometimes behave like H1
in Greek *dza?p > H1a?p
the conflict H1 H2 is solved
by erasure of second H
(this is a LAW in Greek)
hence H1ap > ep-
Turkçe ibib is also regular
z and dz > zero in Turcic.
