There was an invitation? I get the impression, Marbod, who grew up in
Italy (Strabo), was careful not to provoke the Romans too much, and
that his wariness towards the Romans wasn't shared with eg. the
Hermunduri, or his reticence towards same didn't meet with much
understanding among the Cherusci, both peoples he ended up in war
with. BTW, Catualdus might be *Kat-wald- "Chatti ruler". I was
wondering also if Hoby might be *Hod-by "Chatti village", there are
some Hodby's in England.
