comparing them with _qi_. I take the point though that they're not as
extreme as the notations [z=] and [z=`] (or should that be [z`=] ?)
suggest.

The vowel in PinYin ci zi chi zhi
is not far away from
the plural dusts is you cut it
in dus- plus -ts
the ts is not at all palatal in Chinese
while I suppose you will make it
more palatal in English.
and ch-i is retroflex !
